…Our Journey Begins

After Lary’s open heart surgery we needed to learn how to keep his heart healthy and we learned this was largely dependent on eating heart healthy foods. Fortunately, a lot of the healthy eating habits we had established since January would continue to be beneficial. But we needed to do more.

Healthy eating was no longer in the “challenge” category to see if we could lower that cholesterol number. Heart healthy eating was now in the “we want to celebrate many more birthdays together” so let’s figure out how to do this category!

Lary needed to follow his doctor’s orders to the “T”. We needed to become educated about how to incorporate the recommendations from the dietician we had met with in the hospital. We needed to learn more about eating heart healthy foods.

To Increase

We needed to increase nutrient rich foods for a healthy heart which meant eating fresh foods whenever possible. We needed to increase:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and high fiber foods
  • VitaPulse Dietary Supplement
  • Beans and nuts
  • Low-fat milk and low-fat milk products
  • Fish
  • Lean meats
  • Poultry without the skin

To Limit

 Based on our conversation with the dietician, our summarized version of eating heart healthy foods included avoiding, limiting, or decreasing the following:

  • Saturated fats and trans fats

Our Focus

We had two areas of focus. First, we had to learn more about how to avoid the foods we needed to limit. Second, we had to learn more about the heart healthy, nutrient rich foods. Then we needed to figure out how to make smart food choices so we could develop a heart healthy diet that we could live with every day.

So we dove in. We educated ourselves about what we needed to know, (we are still learning) and we decided to make it a fun adventure. This website is a summary of what we have learned along the way. Ready, Set, Go!

 We started by cleaning out our fridge and cupboards. We made a list of healthy foods we could eat. We identified healthy alternatives for any of the banished food we thought we would miss. Please visit our Make a Plan, our Guidelines, and our Healthy Eating Tips and Ideas sections to check out some of the ideas that worked for us.

We now keep only healthy foods on hand. Please click on the “In Our Pantry” button to see some of the items we use often. That way when we want a quick snack, or if we don’t have time to fix a “real meal”, we have convenient “go to” foods always available.

At first we thought it would be more expensive to buy all the fresh fruits and vegetables we wanted to eat. Surprisingly, we found that we did not spend more on groceries – we actually spent less. Since we no longer purchased soft drinks, chips (salty is Deb’s weakness), ice cream, bakery items, cookies, or candy (sweet is Lary’s weakness), we found we actually decreased our grocery bill. That was a really nice surprise!

We find we now enjoy food even more than we used to. We have always considered ourselves “foodies”, but since we have learned more about making smart food choices, we enjoy eating even more.

We love experimenting with new recipes and kicking around ideas about how to change an old recipe to make it healthier. We like playing with ingredient combinations to enhance flavors. After almost every meal we ask ourselves, what could we do differently to make this healthier?

Eating is more fun now because we think about new foods to try, we talk about recipe ideas, we share ideas with others, and we love to experiment with foods. Incorporating smart food choices into our lifestyle has turned out to be a very positive addition to our lifestyle.

Side Benefit

A side benefit to making smart food choices is that we’ve both lost about 30 pounds and we haven’t gained any of the weight back over the past year and a half. And neither of us has ever felt food deprived.

We look forward to continuing our adventure and we’re excited to share what we’ve learned and what has worked for us.
